Hi there.
Thank you for visiting and taking the time to find out more about my work.
I am a landscape photographer based on the coast in East Sussex, with a particular interest in astro-landscape and seascape photography.
My passion for photography started through my love of star gazing, something I've been fascinated in since an early age. I bought a telescope a few years ago and tried taking pictures of the moon with my phone with varying degrees of success, which led me to buying my first DSLR to try and take more detailed images.
I quickly moved away from just taking pictures of the moon, and, before I knew it, I’d become hooked on taking images of the landscape at night, and my love for landscape photography grew from there.
There is always an excitement each time I plan to go out on a night shoot. Being out under a canvas of stars, or the ethereal light of the moon, evokes a magical feeling. It feels like I'm entering a secret world for a few hours while most of the land is asleep. I love being able to capture these scenes and feelings through my photography.
I was also lucky to grow up by the coast and have always had an emotional attachment with the sea. Different weather conditions can evoke a range of emotions, whether it's the calm of low tide, the drama of brooding skies over stormy seas, or some fleeting golden light illuminating the beautiful coastline.
I love taking images down at two of my favourite coastal spots in East Sussex, Birling Gap and the Cuckmere Haven. Both locations are within the South Downs Dark Sky Reserve and offer great opportunities for capturing celestial sights such as the Milky Way. Unsurprisingly, these two locations feature heavily in my astrophotography work.
I also belong to the Seven Sisters Camera Club in Eastbourne, a friendly and supportive community that has been a great place to learn and develop as a photographer.
I was also delighted to win the Starry Skyscapes category in the 2024 South Downs National Park Astrophotography competition, as well as receiving runner-up and highly commended awards in the Magnificent Moon category.
Please don't hesitate to contact me should you have any enquiries about my work, including print sales and astrophotography workshops. You can also find me on Instagram and Vero under @gilessmithphotographic.
I hope you enjoy looking at my images as much as I have enjoyed taking them.
